• Demolition Unsafe Structures

One of my priorities is to have clean, safe, and livable neighborhoods throughout Houston. We are  tackling abandoned buildings that degrade our neighborhoods, harbor vagrancy and crime, and pose real safety concerns for residents. I recently joined with the Department of Neighborhoods, City officials, and community representatives to announce my 2023 Demolition initiative.

The initiative calls for removing nearly 300 dangerous structures by the end of the year.  “Demolition Day” kicked off the City’s second quarter projects, removing the blighted residential building on-site and four other hazardous structures in the vicinity. Thus far this year, 129 dangerous residential buildings have been demolished by City contractors and through property owner compliance with official demolition orders. In the second quarter, the City will target nearly 109 properties citywide with orders for demolition. If you have a dangerous structure to report, please call 311.

  • Earth Day HTX

Recently, we had an opportunity to celebrate Earth Day at City Hall. It was the biggest and best in the City’s history. During my two terms as Mayor, we have made a significant environmental impact, most of which can be attributed to our Climate Action Plan and the City’s Resilient Houston Plan. My focus was to build a resilient program for contemporary Houston that will sustain for many generations to come.

These plans have also been the backbone behind helping us achieve some notable milestones over the last seven years. We have planted 1.2 million trees as part of the targeted goal of 4.6 million before 2030. In 2021 we signed into effect our Building Decarbonization Policy that will preserve more than 700 acres of natural habitat.

We also enjoyed a fashion show our partners Magpies & Peacocks curated, highlighting recycled materials. Designers made my boilersuit entirely from a deconstructed men’s suit, 100% upcycled, and zero waste. Everyone concerned with people and the planet must gather to be a force for good.

  • Family Day in the Park

I invite you to join me on Saturday, May 20, at Family Day in the Park at Sylvester Turner Park. This will be my 15th event, but the last one as your mayor. I want it to be a big celebration that reflects our City’s unity and diversity.

If you have never been, my family day includes music, food, and festivities for people of all ages. The big event will take place at 2800 West Little York from 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. Bring your family and friends!
