For 13 years, we at Lebanon Times have written about Halloween: its origins and traditions, its masks, pumpkins, and candy. But this year, we decided to break the routine. Halloween is not only about entertaining stories and colorful decorations; it also carries a darker side that is rarely highlighted: the tragedies that have accompanied its celebrations around the world.
From Korea to America, from costume parties to crowded streets, moments of joy have at times turned into shock, and celebration into catastrophe. This year, we shed light on the other face of Halloween—the side that makes us reflect on how we celebrate, and why we must do so with greater awareness.
Tragedies Recorded in History
* South Korea – The Itaewon Tragedy (2022): A Halloween night in Seoul turned into disaster when a deadly crowd surge in narrow streets claimed the lives of more than 150 young men and women. A moment of joy became a national shock.
* Deadly Fires: Over the years, horrific accidents were caused by candles and flammable decorations. In some costume parties, fires broke out suddenly, filling the celebration with smoke and panic.
* Traffic Accidents: Statistics in the U.S. show a noticeable increase in traffic accidents on Halloween night, particularly with children trick-or-treating or drivers under the influence of alcohol.
* Crimes Behind the Masks: Some criminals have exploited costumes to hide their identities and commit thefts or assaults.
The Other Side of Celebration
Halloween, which began as a mythical occasion and grew into a multi‑billion‑dollar industry, also reveals the fragility of human life when joy is pursued without caution. Amid laughter and fun, some forget that safety and awareness are more important than any costume or candy.
A Final Message
Halloween is not always a story of masks and fun. At times, it carries painful lessons of lives lost in moments of chaos, or joy overturned into disaster.
Celebration is beautiful when it is mindful… when we do not allow joy to turn into tragedy.
