For years, the City of Houston has recognized brothers Augustus and John Allen as its cofounders, with sculptures in front of City Hall honoring their legacy. They purchased land along Buffalo Bayou—marking the beginning of Houston’s story.
Now, we are also recognizing the woman known as the “Mother of Houston.” Charlotte Baldwin Allen, wife of Augustus Allen, used her inheritance to help purchase that land at a time when women could not legally own property or conduct real estate transactions.
As mayor, I am proud to share that we recently unveiled a statue in her honor outside the Julia Ideson Library, across from City Hall. Thanks to the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce and partners, Charlotte Allen now has her rightful place in Houston’s history.
This was an important moment that unfolded and I invited the women on my leadership team to share it with me. The fact that it happened during National Women’s History Month is significant. I hope you take time to visit the statue and learn about Charlotte Baldwin Allen.
Update on Homeless Resource Center
The City is also making progress with a new resource center for individuals experiencing homelessness. During a recent visit, HUD Deputy Secretary Andrew Hughes confirmed Houston will receive $314 million in federal disaster recovery funding, including support for the facility at 419 Emancipation.
The center will provide more than 300 beds, wraparound services, and include HPD’s Homeless Outreach Team to support both clients and the surrounding community.
By moving individuals off the streets and into a centralized, supportive environment, we can reduce emergency calls, ER visits, and law enforcement interactions, while improving outcomes for those in need and enhancing public safety.
Fleet Week Houston is Back on Schedule
The U.S. Navy, in partnership with the City of Houston, is proud to announce the lineup of ships participating in the first-ever Fleet Week Houston, scheduled for April 15-22. This historic event will take place at the Port of Houston and greater Houston area, offering the public a unique opportunity to engage with service members and learn about the vital roles these ships play in national defense and maritime security. You can find more information at FleetWeekHouston.com.
There will be public ship tours, community outreach events, educational demonstrations and interactions across Houston. This event celebrates the service and sacrifices of our nation’s sea services while showcasing Houston’s strong maritime heritage and its role as a key hub for global trade and energy.
We’re excited to welcome Fleet Week to our city in just a few weeks. It’s a chance for Houstonians to meet the men and women who serve our country and to show our appreciation for their dedication and service. I encourage everyone to tour the ships and enjoy the activities connected to Fleet Week Houston, as we welcome members of the United States Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.
