When I became mayor, I inherited a lot of challenges. My administration is addressing that head-on so the city can provide the best possible services that enhance the quality of life for Houstonians.

While focusing on eliminating waste, fraud, conflicts of interest, and corruption in the city government, my team also worked with Ernest and Young to produce the Citywide Efficiency Study. It provided a roadmap for improving operations, eliminating inefficiencies, and ensuring that every dollar we spend directly contributes to better services for Houstonians.

We are now entering a period of significant financial and organizational transformation.

Every day, the work our employees do shapes our city and strengthens our ability to serve the residents who depend on us. Their dedication keeps Houston moving forward, and I appreciate and am thankful for their service.

As we look ahead to the next fiscal year, we are entering a period of necessary transformation that will help us build a stronger, more resilient city government.

I recently announced a hiring freeze to carefully manage staffing levels as we realign resources. We are also implementing a retirement incentive for eligible employees.

As we work toward closing our budget gap, we must make strategic adjustments to ensure the city remains financially sustainable. While my administration is committed to minimizing the need for layoffs, we will be conducting a citywide restructuring that will lead to significant changes across all departments.

Together, we will build a stronger foundation for years to come.

Observing Ramadan

I recently had a wonderful opportunity to join thousands of people honored to join thousands of people at the largest Iftar in the Houston area.

Ramadan is a time of reflection, fasting, and prayer—a tradition that brings people closer to their faith and each other. I am grateful for the kindness and hospitality of Houston’s Muslim community and proud to stand alongside them in unity.

Thank you to the Islamic Society of Greater Houston for hosting this sacred gathering and bringing our diverse community together. We are always stronger when we stand as one.
