It is hard to believe that we are more than halfway through 2021. As a city, we have faced many challenges – from the COVID-19 pandemic to the deadly February freeze and resulting power failures created by the state-run ERCOT to increases in crime like what is taking place across the country.

I can assure you that Houston Police Chief Troy Finner and his department are working diligently to keep Houston safe.

The chief has met with law enforcement partners on the local, state, and federal levels to better coordinate response times and identify suspects. He also met with the owners of local bars and clubs to urge them to keep weapons out of their venues and protect the surrounding neighborhoods.

Keeping Houston safe is everyone’s responsibility. If you have information about a crime, please call Crime Stoppers Houston at 7130-222-TIPS.

We have also accomplished a great deal together that should make us proud as a city. We have made great strides in technology, innovation, and job creation.

Earlier this year, we welcomed Greentown Labs – North America’s largest climate-tech incubator – to our expanding innovation ecosystem with the grand opening of their new Houston headquarters. Greentown Houston will showcase the latest climate tech and cleantech innovation right here in the heart of Houston’s Innovation District.

The East End Maker Hub provides an opportunity to build a future in manufacturing and ensure that the process is equitable. The East End Maker Hub is a different model, bringing together workforce development, innovation, youth education, and funding communities to truly provide equal access.

Back to School Fest

Children are getting ready to return to school, and the Mayor’s Back to School Fest presented by Shell will take place at the NRG Stadium on Saturday, August 14. It will start at 8 a.m. and end by 2 p.m. or while supplies last. We will provide backpacks and school supplies for 25,000 elementary-aged students. More children will return to the classroom this year following a year of virtual learning, and I know parents can use the help with expenses. I hope to see you there!

Please Get Vaccinated

There has been a recent spike in COVID-19 hospitalizations. The Delta variant is highly contagious. Vaccinations are the only way to protect yourself and your loved ones against this dangerous virus. If you get sick, the symptoms will not be as severe. Each week, the Houston Health Department offers free COVID-19 vaccines. I want you to take your best shot to stop the spread! New cases and hospitalizations are up. We have the power to stop this uptick before it becomes a trend.
